This boat features the larger 120 HP Ford Lehman diesel engine. Most others of this model feature an 85 HP engine. A cruising speed of about 7.5 knots is the hull speed and would be easily achieved with economy using this engine. The boat has a 22 x 22 four blade propeller that permits a maximum of 1600 RPM. An engine speed of about 1250 RPM provides for hull speed at a very quiet noise level.
There are two fuel tanks of 18 gallons each for 36 gallons total.
There is an additional 45 gallon bladder tank for fuel - serves as a day tank for diesel cabin heating system or engine.
The original 105 gallon fuel tank is no longer serviceable.

This large, spacious pilothouse motorsailer with extensive storage would make a great budget liveaboard.
The aft cockpit features a full hardtop and canvas enclosure making this space useful year round. There is a helm with wheel and engine controls that has a large insulated freezer unit installed here that is currently not functional but serves as an ice box. There are storage lockers to port, starboard, and aft in the cockpit including a propane locker. Headroom in the cockpit under the hardtop is 6' 11".
Enter the main saloon and pilothouse from a sliding teak door. Storage lockers with smoked Plexiglas are to port and starboard. A tiled counter top is on the port side. Long settees extend port and starboard which convert into single berths. There is an enormous amount of storage beneath and outboard of these settees. A drop leaf dinette table is amidship here. Forward to starboard is the pilothouse helm station. This has a rotating helm seat and full instrumentation in a wrap around cabinet configuration. The electronics are dated but functional. A large electrical panel is at this station. Headroom in the salon is 6' 6".
Move forward down three steps to enter the galley. There's a propane stove with oven, ample counter space with a single sink, and a Dometic refrigerator. The floors are vinyl and the counters a yellow Formica. A Dickinson Chesapeake diesel stove is at the center of this area and it features a hot water coil for radiant heating of the forward cabin and head compartment and to provide domestic hot water. A 45 gallon bladder day tank provides fuel for this heater or the engine. The boat would be uniformly warmed by this clever diesel heating system. Headroom in the forward cabin, galley, and head compartment is 6' 4".
The head compartment is to starboard. Doors allow access from either the forward cabin or the galley area. The head compartment is trimmed in white Formica and features a stall shower.
The forward cabin has a door for privacy and another that opens to the head compartment. The cabin features an offset double-queen size berth to starboard, a large opening hatch overhead, and ample storage in drawers and lockers. The sides of this space are insulated. The anchor chain locker is forward in this space.

Our Gulfstar 36 Pilothouse is a spacious, open boat with lots of windows and cavernous storage - perfect as a liveaboard choice for a person on a budget. Besides the large interior, this boat has a custom hardtop and full canvas enclosure for the cockpit which greatly increases the living space. A smart radiant heating system runs off of a diesel cabin heater to uniformly warm the boat.
Our boat features the Ford Lehman 120 HP diesel, an upgrade from the stock engine. With a shoal draft of only 3 feet, this boat can tuck into shallow waters easily. The ability to sail adds to the safety, range and capability of the motorsailer. The sails are dated but functional and sound.
The boat is priced with cosmetic issues in mind. The exterior trim needs to be repainted and there are a few areas of brightwork to finish. The hull has been waxed but the deck and cabin could use the same treatment. Inside, the upholstery is in great condition. The cabin needs paint and varnish touch up in places.
All in all, this is a roomy, warm and comfortable pilothouse sailboat for year round cruising and a life on the water if desired.
